It's a little weird how well I remember the day I first read The Westing Game. It was a Saturday in 1984. Daddy must have been working daylight because it was just Mama and me and my little brother. We went to the Little Professor bookstore and Mama bought us each a book. After we left the bookstore Mama took us to Friendly's for lunch. All three of us took our books in and, after we ordered, we read until our food came. I remember clearly the shiny, smooth cover of the brand new paperback. I didn't remember much of the story when I decided to read it again 19 years later but the other memories it brought up of the three of us together, browsing in the bookstore, sharing our finds with each other, and tucked into a booth together, are pretty cool.
